Demeter was a Goddess who was in charge of the Seasons and Cereals (because eating Cornflakes is what makes man different from other animals) and a few other less-important things like marriage, life and death. The Romans called her Ceres - but there was only one of her and they soon got tired of hearing that joke. The Romans took over the Greek Gods lock, stock and barrel but they insisted on calling them by completely different names. As if that was going to fool anybody, right? She had daughter called Persephone (pronounced per-SEF-o-knee, not purse-phone) who went off with Hades - the bad guy, not the bad place, and I know that's confusing. They will fall for bad boys, won't they? She claimed that he abducted her while she was out picking flowers and then deflowered her. There are conflicting reports and in some of them witnesses said that they thought they heard her calling out "Rape!" However that was a Latin word that only meant "I don't want to go where you're going" and didn't have any sexual significance back then. www.etymonline.com Let's say Hades had a defence based on Plausible Denial and Reasonable Doubt. Hades was renamed Pluto by the Romans. He's annoyed with Disney for unauthorised usage of that name and he's suing them for misrepresentation and defamation of character. Remember that is has to be "Prosperina and Pluto" or "Persephone and Hades" because it's surprising how many artists mix up their Greek and Latin. You'd think they just wanted an excuse ...

**NOTE: This video is displayed with audio description and closed captions.** In order to make this movie accessible to all, CaptionMax has added a built-in audio description track with English and Spanish closed captions. Sassy reporter Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) pays a visit to her ex-husband and soon-to-be ex-boss, Walter Burns (Cary Grant), the fast-talking editor of the Morning Post. Distressed that Hildy is giving up her career to wed a placid insurance salesman (Ralph Bellamy), Walter plots to win Hildy back and convinces her to write one last story. Hildy heads down to the courthouse to interview a murderer and file her story in time to catch the train to her new life, while Walters outlandish schemes pull in everyone around them. But who cares about the plot? This 1940 classic is famous for the snappy, old-school banter.

Great Song By Killah Priest A homeless man smiles at me Showing no teeth A young man laying dead in the cold streets He was a victim, beaten bad by the police And every day another funeral There's more grief And every day I like to pray when I see the sun And if there ever was a lost tribe we the one In every hood, there's a project with us in it The old man in the dust goin' nuts - finished Years before they used to say He used to own a business Caught him on taxes Guess you're black You got to know your limits And everybody try to be happy some way I think of dinners in the winters on a Sunday And everybody's poor But we always pulled through it 'Cause of Marvin's influences We always played his music My pops said he was a troubled man Courtesy of Uncle Sam Then I hit the streets and start hustlin' But I can see my grandmoms when she dressed for church A stylish hat, white dress with a matching purse And I could hear her singing loud with the choir Marching in, with the face of joy Proud 'cause her heart's with Him And she could live everlasting in pure peace No longer worried eyes, speak to him before I sleep And I stood by the door when she came at me She said "You got to endure, and learn to be Happy" Stood right beside me Look deep inside me She had inspired me to be Happy Stood right beside me Look deep inside me She had inspired me to be Happy My friend wrote his mother "Mom, I'm doing better now My last year in college, told you I wouldn't let you down And how is ...

Meray shehr Multan ki mitti ki zarkhaizi ka aik aur saboot Aitbar Sajid. He is seen here in final stages of decay. In 80's he was the one whose ghazals were waited among boys. He was handsome n charming and used to read with Tarannum (rhythmic delivery of words in a tune) Waqt bahut bayrehm shay hay. Ba-qaul Josh ye insan ka batway (purse/wallet) jaisa moonh kar deta hay aakhri umr mein. He reading two ghazals here followed by a cover version of Naseem Begum's song from Film Baji being revised (no way near Naseem Begum yet not bad) by a lady whos singing since 1990 but failed to get recognition till this song. Her name is Rafia Bano and she belongs to northern area called Hazarah and is often termed as Koyal / Bulbul -e- Hazarah meaning the nightingale. The song alone is already uploaded by Jalil but i wanted to preserve it with my friend Aitbar Sajid's Ghazals. Hope you like it. Those not interested in poetry can enjoy the melody :-) Regards Dr.Bukhari Suna hay Mir Taqi Mir chandni raat mein jab chand ko apnay joban par dekhtay thay to ronay lagtay thay.. This poem was published in 1991. British humour often doesn't work well in America - and vice-versa. It would appear that the irony gene wasn't present in many of those who sought a New Life in The New World. Perhaps not-being-able-to see-the-funny-side-of-being-teased was why they left. It's absolutely no use trying to explain irony to somebody who lacks the irony gene: either they get it or they don't. "The Pilgrim Fathers didn't leave because they were being persecuted, they left because they weren't permitted to persecute people." I can't remember who said that. It's only quoted here for your amusement. Unfortunately the gene that DID make it is the one for schadenfreude, amusement-at-other-people's-misfortune. Perhaps that came from the Teutonic colonists. So British irony tends to annoy Americans - as Monty Python did until somebody told them it was intellectual humour - and American gross-out comedy doesn't amuse the British. Americans visiting Britiain should be warned that it is absolutely taboo to be earnest, solemn, pompous or self-important. If people appear so, then they're joking. Beware of taking any remark at face value, particularly any criticism or any compliment. I recently saw Hugh Grant give a splendidly funny interview on the Jon Stewart show - but Jon Stewart didn't get it. And Jon Stewart is the paragon of American comedy. The Water Torture, is a woodcut from "Praxis Rerum Criminalium", Antwerp 1556 The Bush administration cartoon version of the ...

The rose often appears in poetry as a symbol of the transience of youth and beauty. As is Herrick's Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying: And this same flower that smiles to-day To-morrow will be dying. or Omar Khayyam's Look to the Rose that blows about us -- "Lo, Laughing," she says, "into the World I blow: At once the silken Tassel of my Purse Tear, and its Treasure on the Garden throw." "White Roses" 1890 was painted by Vincent Van Gogh who never sold a painting. His paintings now sell for more than $100000000 each, so to have this painting would cost a lot more than having a real jug of fresh roses every day for the rest of your life. It's a funny old world, isn't it?

Etheridge Knight (1931-1991) "What I am saying is that through extension we are humanists in the beginning, but how are you going to love or speak to somebody else if you can't speak to your own brothers and sisters?" - Etheridge Knight (1) Etheridge Knight was born in Corinth, Mississippi April 19, 1931. He quit school in the eighth grade and ran away from home several times. He forged his parents signature at seventeen to enlist in the army. He served in Korea and was discharged after being wounded. In an interview with Charles H Rowell in the mid 1970's, Knight said he was confused during his service in Korea. He relays that he told his company commander, " I refuse to be involved in this kind of shit anymore. You got me over here about to be killed, about to kill someone and it has nothing to do with me." (2) Returning from Korea, he became hooked on drugs and alcohol and in 1960 snatched an elderly woman's purse to support his addiction. He was sentenced to twenty-five years in prison. Convinced the harsh term was racially motivate, he was belligerent during the first year of his sentence. He began reading Malcolm X and Langston Hughes' poetry, and turned to writing himself to express his anger. But this was not his first experience with poetry. Much earlier he would listen to the "toasts" in the park. Mona Lisa Saloy describes toasts as: "performed narratives of often urban but always heroic events.

Janet Kuypers reads the original poem "David", which mentions water (somehow), over a boat riding in the Pacific Ocean in the end of December 2007. Actually, this video footage was shot while traveling among the Galapagos Islands, where Kuypers thought the background was a serene setting for reaing poetry. For more information on the writing of Janet Kuypers (or artwork, including photography form the Galapagos Islands), go to www.janetkuypers.com to read more of her work. This is the original poem David When I know you're not going out anywhere in the morning, I get dressed, brew some flavored coffee, put it in a thermos, and bring my book to that hut on the corner of San Lu Rue Avenue. The coffee tastes good when the Florida air is just chilly enough to open your eyes. I sit there, and I write, usually about you, and I wait. I know you're a late riser, but within a half hour you're there. Empty mug in one hand, drawing book and pencils in the other. Cigarettes in pocket. You look tired. But I'm awake. I used to fear for your life, you know, when you were messed up with the drugs, the gangs. I'd sit up nights wondering why you didn't call. I'd wonder if you were dead. I'd wonder if you were beaten up, bleeding on a subway, trying to hold your ribs in place. It hurt to care from five hundred miles away, for someone who couldn't care for himself. I'm glad that you straightened yourself out. Or I'm glad you almost did. I remember being in your car, driving back from Tiger ...

Janet Kuypers performed this poem in the live Chicago feature at the Beach Poets (Loyola Beacg, Chicago) August 14th, 2005. Because this is a live venue on the beach, there were no microhpones, and since Janet Kuypers has a bit of distance between her and the camera (and there is also a bit of wind off of Lake Michigan in Chicago) it is often not very easy to hear the poems from this show. But if you want to either see the full show, or hear studio mp3 recordings from this show, go to the web page www.janetkuypers.com to get the sudio clips, or even the chapbook that was released on the same day with this event. EMAD TV presents Arabic Poetrry Five Letters to my Mother by Nezar Qabbani Good morning sweetheart. Good morning my Saint of a sweetheart. It has been two year mother since the boy has sailed on his mythical journey. Since he hid within his luggage the green morning of his homeland and her stars, and her streams, and all of her red poppy. Since he hid in his cloths bunches of mint and thyme, and a Damascene Lilac. * I am alone. The smoke of my cigarette is bored, and even my seat of me is bored My sorrows are like flocking birds looking for a grain field in season. I became acquainted with the women of Europe, I became acquainted with their tired civilization. I toured India, and I toured China, I toured the entire oriental world, and nowhere I found, a Lady to comb my golden hair. A Lady that hides for me in her purse a sugar candy. A lady that dresses me when I am naked, and lifts me up when I fall. Mother: I am that boy who sailed, and still longes to that sugar candy. So how come or how can I, Mother, become a father and never grow up. I send my best regards to a house that taught us love and mercy. To your white flowers, the best in the neighborhood. To my bed, to my books, to all of the kids in the alley. To all of these walls we covered with noise from our writings. To the lazy cat sleeping on the balcony. To the lilac climbing bush the neighbor's window. It has been two long years, Mother, with the face of Damascus being like a bird, digging within my conscience ...

A poem from Marc Bolan's poetry book "The Warlock of Love", set to music. Close your eyes and let your thoughts stream in "the garden of senses". A short but vivid poem. Let your sub conscious carry you through on this one. Trying to think about it or attach anything to it spoils and gets in the way of the essence within the words. To have and have not is all that Ive got like a count with a purse full of princes. A bird on the wind of a pleasant stream from the brook of the garden of senses. And the count lived like a count, for he was But the widow lived like a widow, and was not.

Mara-dharma at Powell's bookstore 02/08 I step in the store And unseal a cornucopia, Spilling off the shelves More fruits than mouth will allow. And make myself caricature Amidst this verbal plenty, My wants always outstriding, The coins I have in purse. And my nights of quite study Are not even at the pace That keeps up with what is written, But I can no more slow my reading Than a shark can cease his breathing- A shark in domesticity, that's me! All maw and gullet, Endless swallowing Demand for Thoughts Phrases Songs Sweets Meats Film Critiques Sex- I am at one with the beast, A shallow thing swimming the hot shallow seas, At peace with unfulfillable futility of my appetites. At my funeral, my creditors will no doubt tell, That I may not have lived wisely, but I surely lived well.

Janet Kuypers read this poem in the September 20 2005 feature live at the Cafe in Chicago called "SIN" (standing for Scars Internet News), because this low-key show was of Kuypers playing the role of newscaster, with newscast music in the background (complete with the constant noise of typing on typewriters), reading stories from around the world. They opted for this performance to not have a ton of lights for her "broatcast" performance art show (and to not even use a microphone), and they moved to a back area of the performance space, where there were couches and comfortable chairs that people could sit in - much in the way that they would be sitting down to watch the news on TV. For more information on Janet Kuypers, go to www.janetkuypers.com to learn more about her work. Following is material form this show John Stories An older white woman, who after shopping, saw four black men in her car. Deciding to be safe, she owned a gun, and took it out of her purse, pointing it at the four men and telling them to get out of the car. The men left, but she soon realized that she was not at her her, so she found her car in the parking lot a few minutes later. Feeling bad for what she had done, she drove to the police station to let them know what happened in that grocery store parking lot. As she told the story to the police officer, he laughed, and pointed out the four black men at the station reporting their car jacking by an old white lady. No charges were filed.

"love and a question" - poem by robert frost (18741963) from "a boy's will" - 1915 - tune by bill kilpatrick, performed on a yamaha GL1 guitalele with mandolin accompaniment: A STRANGER came to the door at eve, And he spoke the bridegroom fair. He bore a green-white stick in his hand, And, for all burden, care. He asked with the eyes more than the lips 5 For a shelter for the night, And he turned and looked at the road afar Without a window light. The bridegroom came forth into the porch With, Let us look at the sky, 10 And question what of the night to be, Stranger, you and I. The woodbine leaves littered the yard, The woodbine berries were blue, Autumn, yes, winter was in the wind; 15 Stranger, I wish I knew. Within, the bride in the dusk alone Bent over the open fire, Her face rose-red with the glowing coal And the thought of the hearts desire. 20 The bridegroom looked at the weary road, Yet saw but her within, And wished her heart in a case of gold And pinned with a silver pin. The bridegroom thought it little to give 25 A dole of bread, a purse, A heartfelt prayer for the poor of God, Or for the rich a curse; But whether or not a man was asked To mar the love of two 30 By harboring woe in the bridal house, The bridegroom wished he knew.
