Is self indulgent music a bad thing?
Monday, October 4th, 2010When we compose music we should have complete knowledge of music like what sound it produces when we play a particular instrument. We should know the format that we are going to follow in our music. There is a kind of music that is without any goals that is made for self and come directly to us. We don’t make it for a purpose. It can be termed as an aimless music. It is like a feeling that comes to us.
People describe this music as a self indulgent music. We like a music that touches our heart and give us an emotional experience. Let’s take an example of Japanese Shakahauchi music. Shakahauchi is the name of a flute. It is very popular in the east.
It has a peaceful tune in it and every time you hear it, it sounds new. It is just because the music is not caged in a format, it is made free to flow and that is what the beauty of it. In this kind of music the notes are not used again and again. It gets composed when the musician feels good and hearty.
When we come across such kind of music we feel attached to the composer. It is actually the reflection of composer’s state of mind. It is pretty similar to like expressing ourselves with the help of music.
It has many possibilities to create new and different tunes. I am not saying that I am against the musical forms.
A person can only portrait his with perfectness if he or she is having good technical knowledge of playing and knows the art of expression. The music with goals has its own style of playing. It has its own fun and enjoyment added to it. It is just that other music theory forms are as enjoyable and fun as the different forms.
